Snow Yak was formally established by Binod Shahi and a group of self motivated youth as a non-government organization in Nepal in 2014, following several years of informal activities in Upper Dolpa since 2004, with the objective of providing quality education Dolpa completely funded by the Nepali people.
Binod Shahi, a native of Kathmandu, first arrived in Dolpa in 2004 and saw how lack of education and proper health care were affecting the families in the region. Within a few months of his stay in Saldang village, where he was volunteering as a teacher, he decided to dedicate his life to the children of Dolpa.
He saw that the schools in the adjoining villages, the closest being an eight-hour walk from Saldang, were no longer in operation. So, he started working on re-establishing those schools and convincing both the parents and children about the benefits of a good education. This approach led Binod to form a group which would later work in the education sector of the whole region.
Snow Yak aims to inspire Nepalese from all walks of life to feel responsible and help create opportunities for the most disadvantaged people of the nation. It envisions a tomorrow where each child in Dolpa learns to take pride in his/her uniqueness, becomes well rounded individual equipped with practical life skills.
